Day 13 - Sunday 24th September - Perugia
Today the plan had been to do another day trip, this time to Gubbio but I'm afraid the very steep trudge in Assisi yesterday was a bit too much for my poor feet which are still aching terribly. It would have been a 1 hour bus trip to yet another very hilly town. So there's either still bad bruising or in fact a small broken bone. The plan is that if I'm still in quite a bit of pain by the time we get to Malta we'll visit the hospital (Rome's too big).
I'm still hobbling very slowly so we decided to have a quiet day and just saunter up and down streets in the town we haven't seen yet. We discovered how close some of the things we saw whilst on the bus were and we're able to take some great photos. We visited the Perugina store - oh my what a delicious aroma so we had to buy some Baci chocolates. I did a bit of shopping in Tezenis, a lovely underwear store and even tried on some shoes but swollen sore feet are not conducive to shoe purchasing - at least I tried.
We stopped for coffee and tiny macarons at a bar caked Sandi which had been there since 1876 and had beautiful frescoes on the ceiling. Lunch at home a bit of packing and then we went out again to the terrace with the beautiful view, had gelati, strolled around and then stopped for a spritz before heading home again to finish packing before going out for dinner.
While we were at home the rain that was predicted arrived, so pleased we weren't on our way home from Gubbio. The rain had stopped for us to head out for dinner and we decided to go back to Il Bacio, inside this time because there was no outside service due to the rain. Our waiter was there and he gave us his gorgeous smile which we took as him remembering us. We were looking at the wine list when he came by but had decided to just get 2 glasses of the house red. He said to us, "Assisi?" We took this as him asking if we'd gone to Assisi and said yes, that we'd gone yesterday and it was beautiful. He came back with a bottle of wine from Assisi which he proceeded to open and pour into our glasses. We thought how lovely that he was offering us a glass of Assisi wine on the house. As the evening progressed and he didn't come back for the bottle we wondered if there had been some confusion and he thought we had in fact ordered the bottle. Anyway John had risotto with porcini mushrooms and asparagus, I had a traditional local hand-made pasta with truffle, mushrooms and their special sausage. Both delicious. We'd been topping up our glasses but still had wine in the bottle. When the bill came, there it was 1 bottle of Assisi wine €15,50 ! He hadn't remembered us at all. So we filled our glasses, finished the bottle and luckily only had a short distance to go home and not too many stairs because there's a lift in our building.
